About Us
Wildwood Farm is a family-run nursery in Sonoma County spread over nearly three and a half acres of gardens, growing grounds, and sales areasat the site of what was once the Wildwood train stop. The nursery, bordered by vineyards, grazing land, and marsh, slopes up to woods of native bay, madrone, and oak.
We have been in business over 30 years. Hard to believe. What brought us here? Ricardo's evolution as a plantsman began with a degree in history from UC Berkeley with which, logically enough, he became a fledgling dress designer. He shifted to garden design, began collecting unusual plants for landscape projects, started selling some of these, began collecting more, eventually became something of a tree fanatic. With his wife, Sara, also a Berkeley graduate, he found 15 rural acres in Sonoma County for a nursery.
Ricardo ushered in the new century by re-designing the display garden adjacent to the nursery. A few years later, he created a second garden for larger sculpture pieces. Several rare, established trees in this space date from the time John McLaren planted them as part of a park he designed for a private residence. (That residence was never built.) At present the two gallery gardens encompass over 3 acres and showcase original work by some of California’s finest artists.
Joseph Monte followed his parents to Berkeley; his degree is in history with a focus on Latin American studies. He continues to have an active interest in Wildwood; one of his major contributions to Wildwood was to design and build the pavilion at the north edge of the parking area.
Having obtained a Contractor’s license (904649), he is developing a landscape and design business which emphasizes elements of ecological systems. He is available for a wide variety of landscape services. His design and carpentry skills along with extensive plant knowledge shape each new project, be it a new garden or the renovation/ rejuvenation of an existing one. He also offers expert hand pruning.
Currently he is working to design and plant Wildwood’s highway frontage. Workers brought soil from nearby highway expansion projects and changed the grade. This disturbed soil is just one of the many challenges of the site. Many loads of aged manure have been imported to help bring life back to the soil. One area will be infused with mycorrhizae colonies. This treatment enhances and stimulates root systems without synthetic fertilizers. Joe’s design includes drought tolerant perennials and shrubs in keeping with the hot and dry location.
